system not letting me log in as root

hmm...Did you check system logs from the time you were gone to the time you returned? That may be a subtle, but sure sign of system compromise. In the meantime, try going single user and 
changing Root's password? Either that, or you perhaps mistakenly did something that would prevent you from logging in?
