verizon dsl

Folks,

My understanding is that if I want to use Verizon's dsl, I need to have 
a windows box to perform the initial setup. I haven't been able to get 
out of them if this is the need for a browser or if some data is written 
into the modem. Apparently once this is done then you no longer need the 
windows box. I was wondering if anyone has or is using Verizon's dsl 
service and can comment on this.
