Plugging in u s b things?

You need to have usb-storage either as a module or in the kernel. I'd
recommend making it a module. Then, you should be able to access the
device as /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, and so on. Have a look at the
tail end of your dmesg output for any info or error messages.
