Yes, I often prefer perl for scripting to Bash.  Though I would think
your script should be fairly easy to get going.  I start quick and
dirty with shell scripts but when it comes to parsing variables and
loops and such I much rather use perl.  When I see things like sed and
awk imbedded in a shell script, I turn and run away and take refuge
with Mother Perl:).
