slackware and kernel 2.4-24 question

This does bring up a question for me now.  If, as you say, some
modules change and need to be upgraded, how does one go about
compiling and installing them cleanly without having to mess around
with the kernel makefile? Right now, the only compile steps I can see
for speakup are inside the kernel's Makefile.  I could do that but
then it may recompile other modules and 'make module_install' is a bit
radical for updating a small handful of modules. I guess I could work
up something to manually compile and install single modules but...
