obtaining Speakup CVS

Hello everyone,
  When I run the checkout script to obtain the CVS version of Speakup, I am getting the following error:
Bad Interpreter: No such file or directory.
  My current Kernel is 2.4.22, and I am thinking I need to upgrade it to something a little more modern so I can run this script. Regardless of where I run the script, I am getting this error.
