Steve,

The Slackware 9.1 distribution uses kernel 2.4.22 with speakup
1.5, and the drivers are all compiled into the kernel directly,
not as modules. So your modprobe command is not appropriate.

You need to specify your synth name at the lilo boot prompt, and
when you get to root, add an "append" line to lilo.conf and then
run lilo again.

I think what you need at the lilo boot prompt is this:

ramdisk speakup_synth=bns speakup_ser=0
