You have a bunch of tools to help you figure out what is going
on. Examine your bootup messages with "dmesg". Then as root look
at your modules with "lsmod" for clues about sound related stuff.
Also as root you can do "cat /proc/pci" or "lspci" to see what
information is there about your sound card. Beyond that I am not
so sure. In my case I examined the ".config" file for my kernel
and found that the native kernel sound driver for emu10k1 was
selected by default, so I unselected it and recompiled the kernel
and my problem was solved. Shane will have some suggestions I am
sure.
