My best guess is that you have OSS drivers fighting with ALSA
drivers for control of your sound card. It is not sufficient to
compile and install the ALSA stuff, you have to be certain that
the OSS drivers have not found and monopolized the EMU10K1
device. I had to recompile my kernel and say no to OSS in order
for my ALSA drivers to operate correctly with my SBLIVE, and the
chief symptom was the unknown device when running amixer.
