off-topic: Telling chips apart?

It's all ic's now.
If you look at older electronics I have an amp from thbe early 60's 
here that's solidstate but you can still see what's what on it. now 
everything's ic's. you definitely will see some standalone resisters 
and transisters and the like but not as much in computer equipment.
