Fedora's hardware search interfering with BLT2000

Hi folks,
When I boot up my laptop into Linux with my Braille Lite 2000 connected, the unit speaks during part of the boot process but seems to stop speaking after Linux searches for new hardware. My guess is that it scans /dev/ttyS0 which is where I have my Braille Lite connected. However, once I hear that beep for the graphical login and switch to the first virtual console and login, I'm not able to regain speech. I've tried
setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none
modprobe speakup_bns
However, that didn't seem to do anything. Just for grins, I tried using /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, etc but no success. Does anyone know how I can disable this new hardware scan so I can retain speech?
Thanks,
Steve
