Well, to kinda wrap things up a bit, I went off and bought a four port
router locally and got things going yesterday and one of my first
tests yielded a 360+KBPS download from ftp.kernel.org! I have never
seen that high a speed here at my house ever.  I also found out my hub
wouldn't work with my router for some strange reason so am eliminating
that old 486 so I can be down to four computers hooked directly to
that router.

Thanks for the quick education on hubs vs switches.  Oh, anyone wanna
buy an eight port hub?:):)
