That upgrade cycle through so many kernel versions overwelms me so. I
realize if you are trying to use those old floppy images from
linux-speakup.org, you may have the problem of having to use old out
dated kernels to start things rolling. There were some messages
earlier on this list showing where to get a newer version of a
speakup-enabled boot of Debian. I personally do Slackware so don't
follow the Debian scene very closely. If the 2.6.6 kernel proved
problematic for you, at least try with a 2.4.26 kernel and the latest
CVS version of Speakup. The checkout script from linux-speakup.org
will do the CVS pull for you and appropriately apply the patches
automatically. In fact, if you are sighted, you could go in with a
fairly recent version of Debian and run this checkout script to
"speech enable" the guy's system. Then add on whatever software you
need. Personally, I would wait about Xwindows as that has a long ways
to go to be very accessible unless others are planning to use this box
too.

I hope I didn't confuse things more with all this but I just want to
eliminate some of the extra work you were about to go through.
