That over heating is exactly what will happen with the polarity reversed.
That is why I don't like those shack adapters.

I tried this the first time my AC adapter died.  Both the ac adapter got hot

well as the battery in the dec-talk.  I think the battery charging circuit
is
actually in the ac adapter housing.  THere is a board attached to the
transformer which seemed larger than other ac filtering circuits I've seen
However, I didn't investigate the board closely.
