Hmm.  if you want nano, just build it from source on your box, and their 
you go.  You technically don't need packages.  They're conveigent but you 
can run into dependency issues.  Debian's APT is the best.  RPM is second, 
but you can't directly edit the RPM database which is stored in 
/var/lib/rpm.
