sound question

I'm pretty sure debian detects the sound card on my computer because it's 
listed with the other pci devices, but how do I no if I have it setup? 
What packages should I look fore?  Is it necessary to setup alsa?  I'm 
using the kernel 2.4.2-1-speakup That's the kernel version not necessarily 
the speakup version.  That brings me to another question, How do I tell 
which version of speakup I have and what's the best way to upgrade with 
debian sarge? Sean
