speakup and usb to serial converters

Hmm, this is going to rule out being able to use speakup on most of the low priced laptops soon. Del  has dropped all serial ports on their laptops, and gateway is right  behind them. As  near as I can tell, pretty much all of the newer macs also do not have that serial support.

The only way I can see around that problem is have a sited person go through  the install, and then use software speech with speakup. Does anyone have any ideas here?

My main reasoning behind asking theese questions is that the state wants to replace my laptop when I go back to school... They get some sort of deal  through del, so that's who they go with. Unfortunately the machine won't have a serial port...
