If it's verizon, you're using pppoe.  That means you'll either have to
know how to set up a dsl connection by hand or have adsl-setup along with
other rp-pppoe software on your system.  If you have adsl-setup, you run
that script and answer questions to set everything up under linux.
Otherwise search for dsl howto and dsl faq files and linux on the net and
search with your distro as one of the search terms too.
