Yes a compile of the kernel is necessary. Not as daunting as it might
sound however. First, find the checkout script inside the
/usr/src/linux/drivers/char/speakup and when it asks for CVSROOT, hit
enter and then answer 'please' to the password prompt. Then it will
update all the parts it needs to and then you can go and do the kernel
compile stuff. The README file in the top level of the /usr/src/linux
directory discusses well what steps to take. The configure step is by
far the most tedious but once you have a config for your machine and
hardware setups, save it off in a private directory so it can be used
with subsequent upgrades and the like. In fact, whenever I update
speakup or put up a new kernel, I copy back this previously built
config file and place it in my kernel directory under the name .config
and then do a 'make oldconfig' and I don't have to go through all that
decision making all over again.

HTH.
