It turns out that the imbalance of left and right channels was a
total illusion here, stemming from the fact that I was using a
flawed mixer program, amixer. Shaun called my attention to the
fact that amixer does not set capture properly, and mike input
leaks into the right channel even when the mike is set to nocap.
Well, guess what? It was too much signal in the right channel
that drove me crazy trying to figure out why I had a weaker
signal on the left than on the right when recording a stereo
sound source. When I compensated by boosting the left channel, I
had an opposite imbalance at the speakers. I substituted rexima
for amixer in my scripts and now I once again balanced and happy.
Thanks, Shaun.
I gather lots of folks use alsamixer instead of amixer, since it
is curses and supports real time adjustments. That is nice, but
it is not scriptable. Rexima and aumix are good alternatives to
amixer for us scriptoholics.
