Solved my pgp problem... Now what?

I was able to solve my inline pgp problem by downloading mutt 1.5.5.1.  But now, it tells me that my mailbox is 
read-only and it won't let me delete messages that I no longer want to keep.  I tried making /usr/bin/mutt suid root, 
but that causes a host of other problems.  Right now, the read-only mailbox is my only problem.  I did nothing to my 
mailbox itself.  What is wrong and how can I fix it?
