If you disabled lba in the bios, and had a 5-10 mb /boot partition as
I suggested in another post, I think you would find that your older
machines could take much, much bigger drives.

P.S. This assumes of course that you'd be running GNU/Linux, windows
can't handle that kind of a drive setup.
