Are ICMP packets important?

then there may be a setting in your modem to disable the blocking of
icmp packets. check out this ip: 192.168.100.1. This is the remote
admin ip on some popular cablemodems most notably the surfboard.
On mine this allows administration using http, telnet, rlogin, and
snmp.
