can't find serial port

I am coming into this thread late, but does this computer have a modem
on it?

Usually internal modems are set to com4: in the MS world, but they can
also show up as com's 1 through 3 depending on how the machine was
originally configured. 

Another thing to look for is:
Serial ports can be turned off in the bios, which is a mean little trick
that some manufactures also like to do when shipping from the factory.
