My BIOS has USB legacy support, so I have USB support from the get go.

The problem with usb is this.
the usb subsystem don't get initialized until well into the boot
process.
after the filesystems are mounted and the modules are loaded well that
might not be true if you have usb compiled into the kernel as opposed to
a module,
however, it's still a good while before it comes up. so if you have a
kernel panic, you're not going to know about it until well, never.
because your synth won't be sitting there spewing out messages you
really need to hear.
the alternative is you get in there and code us a nice usb driver for
speakup or see if you can have it address the current ones and hack the
tripple talk for us so on so forth rant rant rant,
or if you don't want speech right from go to woe compile speakup as
modules.
