Enable whatever modules you need i.e., the synth you're currently using.

There's really nothing to disable that would conserve more memory than that which would be used by the already compiled-in Speakup modules. Modularizing Speakup entirely and having it load at 
boot time is a rather complicated process. To get an idea on how to do it, look for a file in your kernel source tree called initrd.txt.
