I may be blowing smoke here, don't know what I am talking about, or
maybe on to something.

Is it possible to just redirect the audio using a voice modem. 
After all, isn't the voice modem just another device?
If so, why not do that, and use a record tool on the Linux box. 
Is this missing the obvious?
