dpkg question

Folks,

I was trying to install a package and it seems something is wrong with 
dpkg. I've tried apt-get upgrade etc. and there are packages needing to 
be installed, but each time dpkg goes to install a package, I get the 
following error.
Any assistance appreciated.

Preconfiguring packages ...
dpkg: syntax error: unknown group `Debian-exim' in statusoverride file
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

I can't find or figure out what this syntax error: unknown group 
`Debian-exim' in statusoverride is about.
