Hi.  You're sending confusing and wrong information about how to start
an X session.
If you don't have a display manager running, you would use startx from
the console.  If you have a display manager such as gdm running, you
would log in to the graphical console just the same as a normal user
login.  Big hint, gdm stands for Gnome Display manager.  If you want to
use both, you will have to make sure the startx command starts the X
session using a display not managed by the display manager.
Gdm beeps when it is ready for a user to login.
The default window manager for Gnome is metacity, not gdm.
