changing synthesisers under speakup

Hi. not everything is always built as a module. In particular, it's
possible that all the speakup components were built in to the kernel.
Try the speakup_synth option from the boot up command line. The fact
that you aren't finding the modules is not necessarily an error. If you
swiped the kernel off the Sarge disk, then there are no modules to find,
except the speakup_help module.
