hi,
it may help to know I am trying to access a standard pop3 account. I can
edit config files fine but I looked at the sample for mutt and didn't see
the settings I was looking for.

your mail client is a personal preference. I see a lot of new users
(especially ones who have used internet access through a unix shell
which most likely used it) use pine. I started out using it but ended
up switching to mutt. pine isn't as complex as mutt and slightly
easier to configure. however it lacks some features such as native pgp
support and some people won't use it since it's license is broken. If
you don't have a problem editing a configuration file then mutt is a
good choice. you may also want to look at elm...I can't comment on it
having never used it
