An easier way than changing your links (well, I guess "easier' might be a
matter of opinion) is to  compile speechd-up like this:
aclocal-1.7 && autoconf2.50 && autoheader2.50 && automake-1.7 -a &&
autoake-1.7
./configure
make
make install

and flite1-dev is needed also.
Thank you; it is installed; now all I have to do is the speakup part.
