speechd_up and /dev/softsynth oh and festival.

hi,
subject says it all,
I can get the softsynth module to load I've created the softsynth device 
file I can run speechd_up which appears to just die cause I can't see a 
pid for it,
and after all's said nd done I have not a voice through my sound card.
is there anything I've not done? or done or didn't etc,
