My first recommendation would be that you upgrade from 9.0 to 9.1, or
maybe even current. As I recall, slack 9.1 was the first version with
gnome 2.4 and gnopernicus and all the gnome accessibility tools. Then,
configure x, compile festival, and you should be good to go. I'm
skipping a lot here, since most of the procedures were covered on the
list at some point or other, and should be in the archives.
