On some systems, doing one of the following will work.

1. Login as root, then type poweroff at the prompt.
2. If you are comfortable having Ctrl+Alt+Del do something other than the
standard, edit /etc/inittab so that that key combination executes
"shutdown -h now" instead of "shutdown -r now". This will make the system
turn off when you press this key combination rather than rebooting.
3. If your computer supports ACPI, you may be able to configure the ACPI
handler to execute "shutdown -h now" when the power button is pressed.
Matter of fact, your system may already be configured to do this. This will
bring the system down in the normal way when ever you press the power
button. You need a post 1998 system and ACPI support for this one to work.
Otherwise pressing power will just cut power to the system, which is not
safe.
