getting gnopernicus to work with debian

Hi list. The subject tells my basic problem. I'm trying to get 
gnopernicus to work on a debian unstable system. I can go into X-Windows 
by typing startx. No speech comes up. I'm lost. I remember hearing 
osmething about adding three lines to your .bashrc file, but, can't 
recall what those lines are. If anything isn't clear, feel free to ask, 
and I'll try to clarify
