apache question

This brings me around to another Apache security related question. Is
there a way to have the .htaccess system use the default linux system
passwords for existing users instead of having to set up separate
passwords? An example of this is what CUPS does for its web
interface. The user is validated to be a defined linux account but
the password is the same as for logging into the system normally. Any
way to do this?

Also note that .htaccess files work in individual doc directories
suchas ~user type directories. Dunno about cgi-bins.
