problems compiling FLite

Hmmm... Flite compiled just fine for me, using GCC 3.3.3. There were, 
however, points where it took a loooong time to compile files (not sure 
which ones exactly), and maybe your error was caused by your HD turning 
itself off... I'd see about maybe turning off apm. HTH.
