audacity and speakup?

I think the main problem with gnopernicus as I saw it was lack of a 
good free speach synth for it. I was using festival and the speach 
sucked...it wouldn't stop speaking when something changed I.e. menus 
were a bitch to navigate. This might have been because I was running 
it on a pentium/233 but I don't think so.
