Sound Cards

I am new at this so this might b a bit simple.  I just installed Debian on a
large machine with a soundblaster Live.  What do I need to do to get my
sound card working?  In fact, how to I check to see if it does work?  I want
to install an application that uses it but I really need to make sure it
works first.  Is there something I can read that will tell me how to test
it?  I feel somewhat silly asking this, but you don't know what you don't
know.
