Hi Gene and everyone,

	Nice job on the mini-howto, Gene.

	I am rebuilding my root partition after foolishly allowing "apt-get -f -m dist-upgrade" to overfill it. Many files were gone, but I was able to recover much of my configuration in '/etc'... except for the contents of my /etc/modutils directory. It's a good way to get familiar with the directory hierarch and what makes things tick...

	Anyway, I've built a new kernel version 2.4.22 with everything the way I want it. Now I'm installing alsa v0.9.6. I did it the way I've alway done it (same as you have outlined in your mini-howto) and the modules all seem to load properly. The problem is when I try to run (as root) either alsamixer or amixer (which are there in hte path), I get the following error:

	these are from the alsa-utils-0.9.6.tar.bz2 as weel as the 0.9.6 driver and lib packages. I got no erors\rs when config'ing, making, maki\e installing the packeages. 

	Anybody got an idea what's happening here?

	Maybe you could add a section to your mini-howto, Gene... "Error messages and their solutions"
