My redhat doesn't speak

Where did you get the Red Hat 9 that you used to install? In particular,
what kernel version are you running? What do you get from:

rpm -q kernel

If there is not a "spk2" on the end of your kernel filename, you need to
get a Speakup enabled kernel from:

http://www.linux-speakup.org/ftp/disks/redhat/

In order to get the best speech performance, you may need to create a
new initrd image to load the Speakup driver for your speech synth. For
example, if your synth is ltlk, the mkinitrd command should include:

--with=speakup_ltlk

However, I have no idea whether this will fit on a boot floppy. Haven't
looked into that. So, let me ask the threshold question about the boot
floppy. Why? Why did "it become necessary" to boot from a floppy, as you
write?
