speech tools installation problems

hi
was following instructions from mailing list archives which describe how to
get speakup to work with the festival software synth
my problem is that when i atempt to compile speech tools
the compiler returns an error like
the c compiler can not create executables.
this happens when i run ./configure
from the /usr/src/speech tools dir
using debian with kernel 2.4.18
and gcc 2.95.4
any help would be appreciated
