As far as the processor, the AMD processors are the absolute best balance
between performance and price.  They generally give you the same or better
performance than the Intel processors at a usually much lower price.  I am
using an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ processor, and I paid $110 for it in
December.  I have heard that the same processor is available for about $80
now.
