ncftp help

Hi all.  For years, I've been a user of n c f t p for my ftp needs.  I 
understand there is a p l s command for causing a directory to appear page 
by page and not scroll off the screen.  When I do a pls, I get an error 
looking like
sh: on:  command not found.

Any idea how to enable this command or how to pipe the output of an ls 
from within n c f t p
