Changing Keymap in CVS Speakup

Hey, how does one actually change the key map under the new Speakup? I
made a slight change to speakupmap.map and ran
genmap speakupmap.map >speakupmap.h
as root and still have the old effect.  Do I have to recompile the
kernel to get the new changes?  I tried rebooting but effect is the
same.  Did I miss an important step some place?
