punctuation delay after restarting dectalk

Hello.
I downloaded the SpeakImage cd ISO image from the speakup site.
Is there something else I need to do? I booted but I did not get any speech
from my doubletalk LT even though on the boot parameters field I specified 
linux speakup_synth=ltlk
this is all I need to do to boot a standard slackware distribution on my
machine.
