red hat 8.0 and the Speakup Modified

He probably means an application which was only supported under RH7.1.
We have several commercial applications at work which say they require this or that exact version of Redhat to funcion
However in reality they'll run quite nicely under any version.
As a rule, you can run an application which is designed for any major release of Redhat, e.g 7.x under any minor release (7.1, 7.2, etc).

You might run into problems trying to run applications designed to run under RedHat 6.x with version 7 (though there are compatibility libraries to aid in this),
and you will definitely have problems running applications designed for RedHat 5.x or below.
Eventually, the compatibility libs for RedHat 6.x will be dropped too, but as far as I am aware they're still in version 8.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Aaron
