playing dvd movies from console

Hi gang.  Just as the subject says.  I've read the HOWTO on playing DVD
movies but it says you have to run x.  I know if there is way to play
DVD movies from the console I would not get the vido, but all I would
care about is the sound really?  Can this be done?
