software makes Linux accessible to the blind user. Features unique to this
package include: reading the accumulated log of your interactive session (as
well as screen review mode), audio feedback as text is displayed on the
screen, Customizable speech commands (not just key bindings), a modular
interface between the kernel and the speech package, and escape sequences
that allow applications to speak for themselves.


Note, I've not tried this yet, so none of this is first hand. However, it
seems what the author has done is to create a kernel patch which allows one
to add and remove speech modules. The modules themselves don't live in
kernel space, just the code which interfaces them to the kernel and allows
adding and deletion of modules. Jupiter is one such module. You can build
your own and add it to a running kernel without recompiling or even shutting
down the system.
